Why Following Up Isn't the Same as Being Pushy

I used to think reaching out twice made me annoying. Turns out it just made me forgettable, because nobody remembers the person who asked once and disappeared.

That fear of "bothering" someone is one of the biggest reasons genuine warm interest goes nowhere. It's worth pulling apart, because most founders I speak to are carrying some version of it.

Where the fear comes from

Nobody wants to be the person sliding into DMs with a sales pitch nobody asked for. Fair enough, that instinct isn't wrong, it's just aimed at the wrong target. There's a real difference between chasing someone who's shown no interest at all and following up with someone who's already engaged with you, watched your content, asked a question or shown up in your comments more than once.

The second one isn't pushy. It's just good manners, if you think about it properly. If a friend asked you something and you never got back to them, you wouldn't call that considerate, you'd call it rude. The same logic holds here.

The win-win nobody talks about

Genuine follow-up on something useful benefits both people. The founder gets a shot at a sale they'd otherwise have missed entirely. The person on the other end gets an answer to something they were actually curious about, rather than being left to work it out alone or quietly lose interest and move on to someone else who did follow up.

I've seen this play out over and over. It's rarely the founder with the loudest launch who converts the most warm interest, it's the one who's willing to check back in without overthinking whether it's "too much."

What holding back actually costs

Here's the bit that's easy to miss: staying quiet doesn't protect the relationship, it just lets it go cold quietly instead. The person doesn't think "how considerate, they left me alone." They just forget you exist, or worse, they buy from someone else who did bother to ask how things were going.

Following up isn't sleazy when it's genuine. It's not a script, it's not a "just checking in!!!" message with three exclamation marks, it's an actual, specific question that shows you remembered the conversation. That's the whole difference.

Next time you catch yourself hesitating to reach back out to someone who's already shown interest, ask yourself honestly what you're actually protecting them from. Most of the time, the answer is nothing, you're just protecting yourself from a moment of feeling awkward.

Not sure how much warm interest is sitting unanswered in your own inbox right now? Let's have a chat and find out more.
